What We Offer

Our goal is to provide advanced training for work as applied social scientist outside of academia, as in government administrative jobs, research departments, or community programs. Some of our students also go on to teach at community colleges. The Department offers the 30-credit Online M.A. program in Sociology in a non-thesis format.

What Will You Learn in Sociology?

  1. Understand current social issues and social problems in their cultural, historical, and socio-political contexts, and formulate potential solutions to them, drawing on relevant sociological literature.
  2. The application of various research methodologies and data analysis techniques in understanding social issues and the use of these skills outside of academic settings.
  3.  Use social theory to critically interpret and evaluate both published social scientific research and social policies and programs.
  4. Effectively communicate and present sociological knowledge using oral, written, and other technologically driven mediums.

Admission Requirements
  • No GRE scores required
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75 on 4.0 scale in either all undergraduate coursework or the last 60 hours of the coursework.
  • Official transcripts from all universities or colleges at which courses have been taken.
  • A statement of purpose expressing applicant’s academic interest in pursuing a graduate degree in sociology and future career plans. Limit its length to no more than two single-spaced pages.
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors. However, if an applicant is out of school for more than five years and cannot provide academic references, letters from a supervisor and a colleague at work who can speak to applicant’s ability to do graduate work will be accepted.

Online Master of Arts in Sociology Program

The Master of Arts in Sociology (MA Sociology) program is a fully accredited, fully online, non-thesis degree.  The 30-credit hour program is designed for working professionals who desire to pursue graduate studies in sociology.  Successful completion of coursework with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is requied for degree attainment.
