Promoting Study Abroad and Exchange Programs
The Office of International Education provides educational opportunities to students who are interested in studying abroad. It is our belief that one of the best ways for our students to prepare themselves in the global world is to visit different parts of the world. Currently, we have sent students to our international partner schools, and also are working closely with our international partner universities, our sister universities in UNC system and other outside agencies such as Frederick Douglas scholarship etc. to provide hundreds of study abroad opportunities to our students. Furthermore, the Office of International Education support FSU faculty-led short-term study abroad and short courses for our students.

If you would like to study abroad in Japan, we're pleased to tell you about the Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides assistance for undergraduate and graduate students for a semester or a year-long study abroad program in Japan. It is funded by the U.S. - Japan Council, through an endowment gift of $10 million from Mr. Toshizo (Tom) Watanabe. In 2016, the scholarship began supporting Japanese students' study in the United States. Beginning in 2019, the program funded U.S. students' study in Japan.
If you are interested in studying abroad in Japan, the application period for the Fall 2022 - Spring 2023 academic year is now open! The application period will close on Monday, March 7 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. The scholarship application, supplemental materials, and letter of recommendation are all required before that close date and time.
Eligibility (to study abroad in Japan)
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Currently in good academic standing at an accredited college or university in the U.S.
- Will be enrolled in a credit-bearing course of study at a college, university or approved academic center in Japan in the upcoming academic year
- Demonstrates financial need for international study (i.e., would not be able to study abroad without financial assistance or support)
- (Preferred) Applicants who have been raised by a single parent or who have lost both parents
- (Preferred) Applicants without significant international travel or study abroad experience
- (Preferred) First in family to attend or graduate from college (i.e., first-generation)
- (Priority) The priority for the scholarship is undergraduates who are studying abroad for a year or less. Graduate students and international degree-seeking students may also apply; however, the maximum amount of an award is $25,000 for one year.
