Dr. Tamara Woods

Dr. Tamara Woods is the Bachelor of Social Work Program Director and Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Fayetteville State University. She earned a Bachelors' Degree from Saint Augustine's College (now Saint Augustine's University) in 1988, a MSW from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004, and a PhD in from Capella University in 2013. She has taught in the BSW and MSW programs at Fayetteville State University previously serving as Director of BSW Field Education, Field Coordinator, and Graduate Coordinator in the MSW program. She has over 30 years of social work practice experience which includes Child Welfare, Foster Care, Adoptions, Child Day Care, Self Sufficiency Programs and Mental Health. She is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the states of North Carolina and Georgia.

Her research interests include kinship care, foster care and mental health and military social work. She has presented nationally and published in the areas of kinship care and military social work. Some of her publications include: The health of African American grandmothers raising grandchildren: A growing social problem, Rural grandparenting through a family development lens: Implications for social work practice, Intergenerational caregiving in rural communities: Implications for caregiver health, African American grandparents raising grandchildren: Implications for social work, Rural African American grandmothers raising grandchildren: The impact of chronic health and A call for military centric social work education.

Dr. Woods is currently a Commencement and Convocation Marshal. She is also a member of the Departmental Assessment and Evaluations' Committee, the Academic Affairs Committee, the Field Committee, The School of Social Works' Advisory Board and a faculty advisor for the Fayetteville State student chapter of the National Social Work Honor Society.

Dr. Woods serves on the Cumberland County Schools' Health Advisory Council and the Bachelorette Program Directors' Conference Planning Committee. She has served as an Ethics and Civic Engagement Fellow since 2018 and is an editorial board member for the Journal of Mental Health and Social Behavior. Dr. Woods was named The School of Social Work's Teacher of the Year for the 2018-2019 academic year and received the outstanding online course design award in 2017.
