Dr. Peter Eley

Professor Mathematics Education

Dr. Peter Eley is a renaissance man who thrives in an environment of curiosity, creativity, and engagement. He is a full-rank tenured professor at the College of Education at Fayetteville State University and a former Associate Dean in the College of Education. He is responsible for teaching, administrative leadership, coaching, training, and consulting activities. Dr. Eley also serves as a CAEP Reviewer and Math Achievement consultant. Dr. Eley holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Elizabeth City State University, a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics and Mathematics Education from North Carolina State University, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education.

Attuned to the landscape of higher education, Dr. Eley uses equity, school policy, and technology to motivate mathematical understanding and inform his strategic decision-making processes. A practitioner and leader in K-12 & Higher education, Dr. Eley has served as a mathematics and science teacher in the middle and high school sectors. His work as Data Manager/Webmaster for Saint Augustine University in Raleigh, NC, was the gateway into the collegiate career space, serving as Mathematics and Science Education (NC-MSEN) Pre-College Program Coordinator at Winston-Salem State University and assistant professor at Fayetteville State University. Dr. Eley's exceptional record has been acknowledged with awards and accolades over the years, including Middle Grades, Secondary, and Specialized Subjects Professor of the Year and Fayetteville State University's College of Education Professor of the Year 2014. The Wynton H. Hadley Teaching Award 2014 honoree was also selected as a Senior Research Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute for College and Career Readiness (MICCR), Mass Inc's Gateway Cities Innovation Institute (GCII), and the Rennie Center for Education Research & Policy. Dr. Eley has served as a Faculty Administrative Fellow at Fayetteville State University and the University of North Carolina System 2018-2019.  During the spring 2020 semester, Dr. Eley was recognized and awarded the UNC Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award Medallion.  

As a mentor and leadership speaker, Dr. Eley empowers mathematical leaders of the 21st century all over the country. Dr. Eley uses his scholarly and life experiences as the backdrop to his presentations and facilitations, specializing in personality, humor, and storytelling. With a focus and passion for developing the leadership capacity in youth, Dr. Eley has worked extensively with community leaders and businesses and serves on several advisory boards.  

Currently, Dr. Eley is on special reassignment as the NASA Liaison for Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) through the NASA Office of STEM (OSTEM) and Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Marshall Flight & Stennis Space Center until June 2025. He is working to support the OSTEM division with an assignment to MUREP. Furthermore, his work builds relationships between Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) and addresses the issues of career pipeline in developing future STEM students. 

Dr. Eley is married to his wife, Felicia, and they have two beautiful children. In spare time, some of Dr. Eley's pleasurable pastimes include competitive kayak fishing and spending time at his church.
