Dr. Catherine Elise Barrett

Dr. Catherine Elise Barrett graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in English, reading, and social studies.  She taught middle grades reading and English in Savannah, Georgia, and then moved to suburban Chicago, where she taught sixth-grade English and reading for four years and all subjects inclusively also at the sixth-grade level for three years. While in Chicago, she received a Master of Arts in Education from St. Xavier University.

Dr. Barrett moved to North Carolina in 1998 where she taught all subjects at the fifth-grade level in Durham. The following year, she initiated the Teacher Associate program at Durham Technical Community College, and in 2000, entered a doctoral program at North Carolina State University.  In 2004, she accepted a clinical professorship in the Literacy Studies department at UNC Chapel Hill and in 2005, completed a doctorate in Education.  In 2007, she completed further graduate studies in Literacy education at UNC Chapel Hill.  At Chapel Hill, Barrett served as a clinical professor of literacy studies, supervising middle grades English language arts education students, teaching methods and curriculum and assessment courses; she was the coordinator for the Literacy Studies department until 2011 when she came to Fayetteville State University as an Assistant Professor of Middle Grades Education in English language arts and social studies. Dr. Barrett is currently an Associate Professor teaching English language arts and social studies methods courses, as well as instructional design and assessment and 21^st century literacies.  Dr. Barrett believes that every child must have access to a quality education, and therefore, has immense value, respect, and admiration for teachers and works to provide an extra layer of support to pre-service teachers and her practicing colleagues in the field.
