Institutional Scholarships

The 1867 Endowed Scholarship was established to honor the legacy and history of Fayetteville State University. 

In 1867 seven visionary Black citizens of Fayetteville, North Carolina pay $136.00 for two lots on Gillespie Street and form among themselves a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees to maintain the property for the education of Black youth. The seven founders are David A. Bryant, Nelson Carter, Andrew J. Chesnutt, George Grainger, Matthew Leary. Thomas Lomax, and Robert Simmons.In 1877, the Howard School became not just the first public normal school for African Americans in North Carolina but also the first state-sponsored institution for the education of African-American teachers in the South. It was renamed the State Colored Normal School in Fayetteville that year, Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1939, Fayetteville State College in 1963, and Fayetteville State University in 1969.The 1867 Endowment provides scholarship assistance to sophmores and juniors attending Fayetteville State University.

Naomi W. Hurst '82 established the Adrienne Hurst Lester Scholarship in honor of her daughter.  The scholarship is awarded to a student from Cumberland County, NC, who is the first in their family to attend college and is majoring in Computer Science or Education.

Annette Cluff '70 and her husband Alsie have been longtime supporters of Fayetteville State University and supporting deserving students in need.  In their home city of Houston, TX they founded the Varnett School, a charter school with over 1500 students spread across 3 campuses. Over 90% qualify as economically disadvantaged. 

When introduced to then new Chancellor James A. Anderson, Mrs. Cluff said, "Right then I knew it was time for me to give a gift back to the university that had given me so much...Much of my success came from the people at FSU"The Annette and Alsie Cluff Endowed Scholarship is awarded to select students who are classified for the Chancellor's Global Scholars Community at Fayetteville State University.

Barbara Massey is the late wife of Fayetteville City Councilman Robert A. Massey, Jr.  Mr. Massey graduated Fayetteville State University in 1970 and taught History and Political Science at Fayetteville State University from 1972 to 1978.  He started the Barbara Massey Endowed Scholarship Fund in memory of his wife. 

The Barbara Massey Endowed Scholarship is awarded to Fayetteville State University students in good academic standing.

Dr. Grace C. Black is the former dean of the School of Business and Dr. Virginia F. Curry is the former chair of the Foreign Language Department.

Dr. Grace C. Black and Dr. Virginia F. Curry established these scholarships to be awarded to two deserving juniors one majoring in Business the other in Spanish or the Humanities.

Dr. Charles I. Brown was a graduate of the class of 1942 and a professor in the FSU Education Department for more than 30 years. Known for his dedication to his students and to educating others, Brown continued his legacy of dedication through a many gifts including this endowment.

The C.I. Brown Endowed Scholarship is awarded to deserving students majoring in Education.

Naomi W. Hurst '82 established the Adrienne Hurst Lester Scholarship in honor of her daughter.  The scholarship is awarded to a student from Cumberland County, NC, who is the first in their family to attend college and is majoring in Computer Science or Education.

The Charles A. Darlington Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Darlington, former Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management. 

This scholarship is awarded to a freshman male majoring in science, education, or mathematics with a strong academic and community service background.

Curtis Worthy '78 is the managing partner in Worthy Real Estate and the CEO of Worthy's Tax Consulting. He previously served as tax auditor with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service before retiring. He served as a deputy with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department and taught income tax courses at Fayetteville 
Technical Community College. He received his bachelor's degree 
in accounting from Fayetteville State University and also 
attended graduate school at North Carolina Central University.

The Curtis Worthy Scholarship was established by Curtis and Janice Worthy's family and friends honoring his lifetime contributions, achievements, and service.  Recipients must be North Carolina residents.

John C. Jones came to Fayetteville State University in 1959 as an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Science.  In 1960 he became Dean of Men and promoted to Dean of Students two years later.  In 1977 Dean Jones was appointed as the Vice Chancellor for Student Development. 

The Dean J. C. Jones Scholarship awards full time students from North Carolina who are sophmores, juniors, or seniors and have academically excelled at FSU.

Nealie Bacote McLean, '49 and widow of Dexter A. McLean, received a degree in education from FSU and is a retired school teacher.  "This act of generosity from the McLean family demonstrates their love and loyalty to Fayetteville State University," said Stephen L. McDaniel, former Vice Chancellor of Institutional Advancement. "Mrs. McLean has fond memories of her days as a student at this institution and she sees the establishment of this endowed scholarship as way of giving back to the place that has given her so much."

The Dexter and Nealie Bacote McLean Endowed Scholarship assists students who are members of the university's marching band or play on an athletic team.

Donice Marie Harbor Donice Maria Harbor was a humanitarian, grassroots activist, public servant, and a 1995 graduate of Fayetteville State University.

The Donice Marie Harbor Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a sophmore majoring in political science.

Naomi W. Hurst '82 established the Donna Hurst Carter Scholarship in memory of her oldest daughter.  The scholarship is awarded to a female student , sophmore or above, majoring in health schience, nursing, or a related field.

Dr. Charles A. Lyons was the seventh chief executive officer of Fayetteville State University and served as President and Chancellor from August 1,1969 to December 31, 1987.

He was a native of Conetoe, North Carolina and received his A.B. degree in History from Shaw University, the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from The Ohio State University, and studied at Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in India, and the School of Business Administration at Harvard University.  

Dr. Lyons was a social studies teacher in Raleigh City Schools, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Grambling College, Professor of Political Science and Dean at Elizabeth City State College, Executive Secretary of the North Carolina Teachers Association, and Director of Admissions at Howard University before coming to Fayetteville State University.  

He served as President of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education, was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, and his civic affiliations in the city included the Civitan Club, Ex-Officio member of the Board of Directors for Fayetteville Area Chamber of Commerce, member of the Board of Directors for United National Bank, Honorary Member of the Kiwanis Club, member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge Number Three of Fayetteville, and, stressed community participation by faculty, staff, and students.  

Achievements during Dr. Lyons' administration included the designation of FSU as a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina, the establishment of an Office of Development and the first Capital Campaign, the Telecommunication Center and WFSS-89.1 FM Radio Station, Associate Degrees at Fort Bragg, Air Force ROTC at FSU, construction of eight new buildings, and 23 bachelor's degrees and 3 master's degrees with 77percent of faculty with terminal degrees.

Criteria: Students must demonstrate a financial need based on FAFSA requirements and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.50. 

Dr. Frank Merchant taught at Fayetteville State University for over 30 years.  He taught math, history, and was the chair of the Health and Physical Education Department for a number of years.

In his honor the Dr. Frank Merchant Scholarship is awarded to a Junior or Senior athlete majoring in physical education or education with a focus on math or history.

Dr. Ruth Johnson was the chair for the Department of Nursing.  She died suddenly on March 3, 2007.  The Nursing faculty and staff began the Dr. Ruth Johnson Nursing Scholarship in her memory.

The Dr. Ruth Johnson Nursing Scholarship provides financial support to students majoring in Nursing.

Dr. Valeria Fleming has been teaching at Fayetteville State University since 1960.  As of 2010, her 50 year anniversary, Dr. Fleming was the longest serving university employee.  In her tenure at FSU she has held numerous positions advancing beyond the classroom to show her dedication to Fayetteville State.  In her honor this scholarship as well as an annual Natural Sciences Professional Round-Up were established.

The Dr. Valeria Fleming Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student majoring in Biology.

Mr. Frederick Cole, in memory of his grandmother, Mrs. Ethel Burney Baker who honored her country with more than 20 years of service at Fort Bragg Army Base.  She was a gentle lady who would not hesitate to help family, friends, and relatives as well as a dedicated mother to five sons and a daughter.

The Ethel Burney Baker Endowed Scholarship is awarded to descendants of Mrs. Baker or a graduate of E.E. Smith Senior High School in Fayetteville, NC.

For more than two decades, Felton Capel has been a volunteer and financial supporter of the Fayetteville State University. Felton has served as chairman and member of the FSU Board of Trustees from 1978 to 1987 and then as vice chairman and member of the FSU Foundation Board of Directors for more than 10 years. Fayetteville State University named and dedicated its sports arena to Felton J. Capel in 1995.   He married Jean in 1954.

The Capel Scholars program is designed to provide financial assistance to North Carolina undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence.

Thomas Bacote and Thomas Gavin are both former Band Directors for the Fayetteville State University Marching Bronco Express Band.  The marching band at Fayetteville State University ("Marching Bronco Express" or "MBX") is the major performing organization of the university. The MBX has performed for thousands of people around the country at various parades, countless home and away football games and events at venues on campus and around the Southeastern NC region.

The Gavin-Bacote Endowed Band Scholarship was established in their honor and is given to a sophmore or above member of the Marching Bronco Express Band.

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1960 with Dr. Henry L. Eldridge being named as its chair, after nine years of teaching on campus.  In 1999 FSU proudly announced the renaming of the department as the Henry Eldridge Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in honor of his many years of fine teaching.

The Henry L. Eldridge Scholarship promotes excellence in mathematics and will provide financial assistance to deserving students in this field.

James Burch graduated Fayetteville State in 1949.  His love for sports shows in his commitment to Fayetteville State's Athletic department.  He established the James T. Burch Scholarship to recognize student athletes who exemplify the qualities of academic excellence, involvement in public service and love of athletic competition.

Jerald Michael Wilson is the late son of Carolyn Dunston.  Mrs. Dunston graduated Fayetteville State University in 1985 and retired as the Director of Alumni Affairs in 2006.

The Jerald Michael Wilson Scholarship is awarded to Fayetteville State University students in good academic standing.

Dr. Knuckles taught at Fayetteville State University for forty-two years (1956-1998) including eleven years as the department chair of Natural Sciences and fourteen years as the assistant football coach. 

In his memory the Joseph L. Knuckles Scholarship is awarded to a promising student majoring in science or mathematics.

In 1976 the Riddle Foundation was founded by J. P. Riddle.  Joseph Riddle was on the FSU Board of Trustees and March Riddle was a board member for the FSU Foundation.  In 2007 the Foundation established a scholarship at Fayetteville State University saying, "It is expensive to go to college and there are a lot of qualified students out there academically, that come from needy families or split families or do not have families."

The Joseph P. Riddle, Jr. & March F. Riddle Scholarship is awarded to deserving students from Cumberland County, NC.  Bladen, Harnett, Hoke, Moore, Robeson, and Sampson County residents are also considered.

Dr. Fulmore is a 1948 Fayetteville State University alum.  He began his teaching career in Davie county and continued his decades-long career in education holding various administrative and teaching rolls throughout the Southeast.  He served as a distinguished member of the FSU Board of Trustees and is now a Trustee Emeritus.

The Dr. Julius and Lucille Fulmore Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman from Davie, Guilford, or Robeson county.

Keith Allison Family Scholarship

Mr. Keith Allison was a member of Fayetteville State University Foundation Board and is the chief executive of Systel Business Equipment Co., office-equipment provider in Fayetteville, N.C.  The Allison Family has a very strong commitment to Fayetteville State University and community service.The Keith Allison Scholarship is awarded to Fayetteville State University students in good academic standing.

Arlena Barksdale grew up in Harnett and Cumberland counties in North Carolina and received her BA in Elementary Education from FSU.  She was a beloved educator working at West Southern Pines School from 1944-1982.  Mrs. Barksdale died in 2002, leaving this endowment as part of her will.

The Lena M. Barksdale Scholarship was established for undergraduate students enrolled in a Teacher Education program.

Dr. Lloyd V. Hackley served as Chancellor  of Fayetteville State University from 1988 to 1995.  He came out of retirement to come back to the University as Chancellor in 2007 and now serves the University as Chancellor Emeritus. 

In honor of him the Lloyd V. Hackley Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to full-time commuter students who have excelled academically and in the service of their respective communities.

Mary McAllister is a 1958 graduate of FSU (then Fayetteville State Teachers College).  She served as a Representative in the North Carolina State House of Representatives from 1991-2010.

The Mary E. McAllister Scholarship is awarded to a student from Cumberland County, NC who is majoring in Elementary Education.

Mary A. Person  Mary was born in Statonsburg, North Carolina. She attended elementary and high school in Wilson and Wayne counties, respectively.  She was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Fayetteville State University in 1976.  True to her passion for becoming the best teacher possible, Mary continued her education and was awarded a Master of Arts degree in Reading in 1981 from Trinity University in Washington, DC.  She subsequently continued her education and was awarded an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech in 2000.  

During Mary's tenure as a teacher and an administrator, she served her first three years as a High School Reading Teacher in Kinston, NC and Washington, DC.  Over the next 30 years, Mary was employed by the Fairfax County Public Schools where she served as a Sixth Grade Teacher, Gifted and Talented Teacher, Reading Teacher (K-6), Title I Reading Teacher/Program Assistant, Language Arts Instructional Support Teacher (K-6), Assistant Principal, and Principal. Mary's educational leadership vision was to be collaborative in creating a learning environment where all students were achieving and reaching their academic potential.  Further, Mary wanted to establish a learning environment where staff members were providing differentiated instruction based on ongoing assessment, best practice, and research based learning.  Her mission was to work in collaboration with school staff, county resources, and the community to improve the outcomes for all students especially those who were disadvantaged

This scholarship is for NC residents majoring in Elementary Education. 

Dr. Rudolph Jones was the sixth President of FSU. He was a native of Winton, North Carolina. He served as a high school Teacher, a high school Principal, a college Dean and a college President. He was married to Mammie W. Jones and had a son named Rudolph Bernard Jones. Dr. Rudolph Jones came to Fayetteville State College in 1952. He served as Dean of the College until the retirement of Dr. James W. Seabrook in 1956. He was elevated to the presidency by the Trustees at that time.

Mildred and Rudolph Jones Memorial Scholarship is awarded to full time fayetteville State University students who are of good character and show academic merit. .

Naomi Hurst '82 has been a longtime financial supporter of the Fayetteville State University amd member of the FSU Foundation Board of Directors.  She established two other scholarships at FSU in honor of her two daughters: The Donna Hurst Carter Scholarship and the Adrienne Hurst Lester Scholarship.  Her husband, Dr. Troy Graham set up this endowment in memory of her. 

The Naomi Hurst Endowed Scholarship is awarded to freshman and sophmore students majoring in Computer Science or Information Systems.

For over 100 years, IIANC has been serving independent agents and insurance companies throughout the state providing an abundance of products, services, resources and knowledge that can help agencies and companies succeed in today's competitive insurance industry.

The Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina Scholarship is offered to Junior and Senior North Carolina residents whose major is in the School of Business.

Dr. Inder Nijhawan is a Professor of Economics at Fayetteville State University.  He established this scholarship for the School of Business and Econcomics in memory of his parents Rampershad and Mitravati Nijhawan.

The Nijhawan Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in Business who are academically excelling.

Dr. Marion Gillis-Olion is the Dean of FSU's College of Education. She has worked at FSU since 1983. During her tenure at FSU she served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, SACS Liaison, and Director of Self- Study - a responsibility associated with the SACS accreditation process. She also has previously served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Chairperson of Elementary Education.

Dr. LaDelle Olion is a Full Professor of Special Education at FSU. He has worked at FSU since 1982. During his tenure at FSU he served as the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research for twenty years. He also served as the Dean and Assistant Dean of the of College Education.

The Olion Endowment Fund for Teachers is awarded to FSU undergraduate students with a GPA of at least 2.7 overall and to FSU gradutate students with a GPA of at least 3.0 overall and who are majoring in undergraduate or graduate programs leading to licensure in elementary education, early childhood education (teaching), special education, reading education, or middle grades education with a concentration in language arts.

Pearlie White-Turner was the mother of 1988 graduate Warren Turner.  Mr. Turner established this fund in memory of his mother.  He received his bachelor's degree in political science from Fayetteville State University.  Turner was inducted into the Fayetteville State University Football Hall of Fame in 2005.  

The Pearlie White-Turner Scholarship is awarded to North Carolina residents excelling academically at Fayetteville State University.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity is dedicated to strong bonds of brotherhood, living with integrity, serving humanity, promoting quality education and developing leaders.  Their motto "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity" embodies and promotes brotherhood, scholarship and service.

The Honorable William Webb, a member of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, has joined with Fayetteville State University (FSU) to establish an endowed scholarship. The Ronald B. Lewis Endowed Scholarship Fund will support FSU students who served in the United States armed forces.

To be eligible for the scholarships, students must meet the following:

•     Recipient shall have served in the armed forces of the United States, without regard to character of discharge
•     Minimum GPA of 2.5
•     Good standing with the University
•     Financial need

Ruby Smith Wilkerson was a Fayetteville State University 1968 graduate with a major in Education.  Her sister Melba Uzzel, Class of 1965, started the Ruby Smith Wilkerson Schoalrship in her memory.  The Smith family has been dedicated to Fayetteville State University for years and were honored as Family of the Year in 2000.

The Ruby Smith Wilkerson Scholarship is awarded to Junior and Senior Education majors from North Carolina.

The Links, Incorporated founded in 1946, is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.

The Southern Area Endowment and Fayetteville Chapter of Links, Inc. Scholarship is awarded to deserving Fayetteville State University students.

In support of a well deserving undergraduate member of the Delta Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., enrolled and in good standing at Fayetteville State University with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  The scholarship recipient must demonstrate university leadership and community service.   In addition, the scholarship recipient is to be announced annually and made available to take a photo with the graduate chapter, Tau Gamma Gamma of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Theodore and Diane DeBose '84 have been longtime supporters of Fayetteville State University.  They created this scholarship fund to promote excellence in education.  The couple can be seen at all our home football and basketball games!

The DeBose Endowed Scholarship is awarded to an FSU student majoring in Business.

Meet the Recipients:

William Mobley

William James Nathaniel Mobley is the proud son of William Billy Mobley and Constance Burnette Coram. William is a senior attending Fayetteville State University majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing while minoring in Digital Art. Despite all of his extracurricular activities, he has maintained a 3.0 GPA. Originally, a native of Buffalo, NY, William currently resides in Goldsboro, NC where he has lived for thirteen years. He is a God fearing young man who acknowledges God in every aspect of his life. He lives with a mindset of humility and a quiet confidence, while striving to be the best person he can be in every aspect of his life. His hobbies include playing basketball, expressing his different styles in fashionable dressing, art, and maintaining strong spiritual practices.

William is an active member in several organizations including the Bronco MILE (Male Initiative for Leadership and Excelling), Student Government Association, Haute Couture Fashion Society, and is a proud member of the Epsilon Beta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. William has volunteered for the Gear UP Program which entails mentoring and supporting high school students to help maintain great academic success. As a sophomore he won 2nd place in the Delta Iota Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.'s Mr. RHOmeo pageant. This pageant was the first one ever held on the campus of Fayetteville State University. William's latest achievement was being elected as the 2015-2016 Mr. Fayetteville State University during the 13th Mr. Fayetteville State University Scholarship Competition.

Jadelyne Rorie

Jadelyne Rorie is a graduate of Monroe High School in Monroe, NC. She is now a senior at Fayetteville State University majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Management. Jadelyne has a particular interest in human resources. Her devotion to assisting others, mediating issues, and interacting with coworkers enticed her to follow a career in human resources.

Jadelyne is a highly motivated student leader who has an amazing commitment to excellence. At the university, Jadelyne is a member of Future Business Leaders of America (Phi Beta Lambda), an educational association with a quarter million students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields. Jadelyne is preparing for life after college by affiliating herself with INROADS, Incorporated, a company that prepares students for leadership positions by placing them in internships with U.S. corporations. Her academic success has granted membership into Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and Beta Gamma Sigma Honors Society, both requiring a GPA of at least 3.50. Additionally, she is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and the FSU Honors Club. Jadelyne is an advocate for community involvement and provides service to the FSU campus and surrounding community as an active member of the Omega Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. While being actively involved, Jadelyne still academically excels by being on the Chancellor's and Dean's list each semester.

Dr. Tillman Jackson was a professor, Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Dean of the Fort Bragg Center at Fayetteville State University.  He retired in 1995.

The Tillman V. Jackson Scholarship offers financial assistance to students majoring in education with a focus on mathematics and science.

Tony Rand is an attorney and former Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly who represented the state's nineteenth Senate district from his appointment in 1981 until 1988, and from 1995 until 2009.  A lawyer and consultant from Fayetteville, North Carolina, Rand served as Senate Majority Leader from 2001 through 2009.

The Tony Rand Scholarship is awarded annually to deserving students attending Fayetteville State University.

Fred Waddell is the founder of the Waddell Group and member of the Fayetteville State University Foundation Board.  The Waddell Group is comprised of a diverse group of African-American men and women from across the United States that support FSU's Athletic Programs.

The Waddell Group Scholarship is awarded to student athletes who show outstanding performance on a varsity team.

Dr. Willis B. McLeod, a 1964 graduate of Fayetteville State University, was appointed Chancellor on November 15, 1995 bringing over 30 years of professional experience in the field of education. He was the ninth Chief Executive Officer of the 135-year-old institution, and the first alumnus to serve as Chancellor since FSU became a constituent of The University of North Carolina.  Dr. McLeod retired as Chancellor on June 30, 2003 with emeritus status.

The Willis B. McLeod RISE Scholarship is awarded to deserving and financially needy students attending Fayetteville State University.

100 Black Men of America, Inc. is committed to the intellectual development of youth and the economic empowerment of the African American community based on the following precepts: respect for family, spirituality, justice, and integrity.

100 Black Men of Cape Fear Region, Inc. established this scholarship to fulfill their mission to improve the quality of life within our communities and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all African Americans.

Scholarship recipient must be a female student who is military affiliated with a current military ID in one of the following categories (active duty, reservist, family member or retiree).Donor and Scholarship Namesake: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a non-profit organization of over 200,000 initiated members, in over 950 chapters around the world. Founded in 1913, Delta's expressed purpose was to promote academic excellence; provide scholarships; support the underserved; highlight issues and provide solutions for community problems; and champion the establishment of positive public policy through civic participation.Delta Sigma Theta's Fort Bragg Area Alumnae Chapter (FBAAC) was chartered on November 16, 1996. Since that time, the FBAAC has supported military families in the Fort Bragg community and surrounding areas. We have provided scholarships to many deserving students throughout our brief history. Several years ago FBAAC became aware of the tragic incident that resulted in the death of Lisa Nicole Bryant while assigned to Fort Bragg in 1993 as a summer ROTC instructor. She was truly a bright star in our midst. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University with a degree in sociology. She was a vivacious young army officer who earned her commission through Army ROTC. At Princeton she was the vice president of her class, founder and captain of the Princeton cheerleading program and a member of Delta Sigma Theta. She had a promising career in service to our country that was tragically cut short. An endowed scholarship in her honor has been established in the Sociology Department at Princeton University. The FBAAC is dedicating this scholarship locally to honor her memory and pay tribute to the values which she represented so well. It is our hope that this scholarship will serve as a lasting and meaningful homage.

The ARAMARK Scholarship is awarded to campus residents who have completed at least two semesters at Fayetteville State. This scholarship opportunity is open to all students who meet the eligibility criteria - including international and non North Carolina residents.

Belk is a department store chain founded in 1888 in Monroe, North Carolina. After the founding of the first Belk store, the company grew in size and influence throughout the South. Today, Belk occupies 29 million feet of retail space, all with the single goal of satisfying the modern Southern lifestyle.

The Belk Scholarship is awarded to first year students from the following counties:  Cumberland, Bladen, Columbus, Scotland, Moore, and Richmond Counties of North Carolina.

Bill Hennessee was the voice of the Fayetteville State University Broncos football team, their radio announcer. Mr. Hennessee spent nearly 50 years in radio, and was the first announcer to open a microphone on WDIU-AM (1600) in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  He is also a member of the Fayetteville State University Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Bill Hennessee Radio Broadcasting Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student studying radio broadcasting.

Chancellor's Award of Excellence in the Performing and Visual Arts is awarded to deserving students in the areas of Performing and Visual Arts. 

The Chancellor's Scholarship Program is designed to assist academically talented students who enroll at Fayetteville State University to be socially concerned, academically successful, and prepared to accept civic responsibility.  Since 1991, FSU Chancellor's Scholars have volunteered their time and effort to non-profit agencies and organizations in both the local community and surrounding areas of Southeastern North Carolina.

To well-deserving student athletes with financial need for the purpose of their education. Scholarships will be awarded in support of student athletes in good standing with Fayetteville State University, explicitly in support of football athletic scholars, with a 2.30 GPA or better.

Ernestine Carter Chance was the wife of alum, John Chance '64.  She had her degree in Business Education from North Carolina Central University and taught in the public schools of North Carolina, Virginia and Louisiana.  Her greatest desire in life was for every child to experience the same good educational opportunities as she gave her son, John Jr. 

The Ernesting Carter Chance Endowed Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Junior or Senior majoring in Natural Sciences.

Dr. Evelyn H. Burrows was a professor of speech-language at Fayetteville State Univesity.  She served as a member of the North Carolina Speech, Language and Hearing Association, Carolinas Communication Association, American Speech-Language and Hearing Association, and the National Communication Assoication.  Her brother, John C. Honor, Jr., established the scholarship saying, "she loved education and the opportunity it provided her to give of herself to young people... she loved Fayetteville State University and worried about its future as a historically African-American institution of higher learning..."  This scholarship helps maintain the legacy and traditions of FSU.

The Evelyn H. Burrows Scholarship awards $500 per year to a deserving student enrolled in speech, theater, accounting, or biology.

The Links, Incorporated founded in 1946, is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.

The Fayetteville Chapter of Links, Inc. High Achiever Scholarship is awarded to deserving Fayetteville State University students.

Dr. J. Ward Seabrook was elected President in 1933. Under his leadership the institution becomes a four-year college, was renamed Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1939, and earned both state and regional accreditation. Dr. Seabrook retired in 1956 and was elected President Emeritus.

The Class of 1948 established the J.W. Seabrook  Scholarship to be awarded to a Junior or Senior Education major with an excellent academic record.

The John and Louise Wilson Memorial Scholarship has been established in the honor of two wonderful people who instilled an ethic of hard work and aspiration to serve their community in their children, grandchildren, and the people whose lives they touched.  John and Louise Wilson resided in Windsor, North Carolina and together they raised eleven children and assisted in raising over twenty grandchildren.  Because of the impact in their lives, this memorial scholarship is designed to have a positive impact on additional lives in the future.  The Wilson family could not think of a better way to remember John and Louise Wilson than this scholarship to assist students at Fayetteville State University.

Katie C. Forshee graduated from FSU, then Fayetteville State Normal School, in 1941 and fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a public school teacher.  After retiring from the Fayetteville City School System, she taught History and Political Science at FSU. Forshee had a passion for learning and teaching students. She dedicated her life to education and was an avid supporter of Fayetteville State.

The Katie C. Forshee Scholarship is awarded to deserving FSU students.

Mamie Currie Evans attended State Normal from 1934-1936.  She raised her family across the street from Fayetteville State University.  Over the years she assisted more than one hundred college students at FSU by letting them live in her home for little to no cost.

The Mamie Currie Evans Scholarship was established in honor of her nine children and twenty-six grandchildren.  The scholarship is awarded to needy students who are natives of Robeson County.

Mary and Joseph Bryan are the deceased parents of former Chancellor T. J. Bryan, Fayetteville State University's tenth Chancellor, FSU's first woman Chancellor, and the University of North Carolina's first African-American woman Chancellor.  The couple was married in 1942 and had six daughters.  Although neither completed high school, they taught their daughters the importance of self-reliance and endurance.

The Mary and Joseph Bryan scholarship is awarded to a nursing student in honor of Mary's lifelong desire to become a nurse.

Mary Ann Bolden was a faculty member for the Department of Criminal Justice.  She died suddenly in 2007.  The Criminal Justice faculty and staff began the Mary Ann Bolden Scholarship in her memory.

The Mary Ann Bolden Memorial Scholarship provides financial support to students majoring in Criminal Justice.

Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church is across Murchison Road from Fayetteville State University.  The church and its members have been long supporters of FSU students.  In addition to student ministries, in 2009 they established the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church Scholarship which is awarded to students attending of the many churches in Fayetteville, NC.

NCDOT HBCU/MSI Transportation Scholarship Program

NCACPA has grown tremendously since its inception in 1919, from a mere 20 founding members to more than 13,000 today. For the past 90 years, providing superior member service has been the primary objective for the association. With strategic guidance from the 
board of directors, committees, and chapters, NCACPA has been successful in serving North Carolina's CPAs, regardless of their area of accounting or professional climate.

The NCACPA Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student majoring in Business or Accounting.

The North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus Foundation campaigns "Continuing the Investment in Promising Futures." Each year hundreds of students watch their dreams of a college education disappear because of the lack of financial support to enter college or the resources to stay in college. Students attending North Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities continue to be faced with mounting financial debt associated with their college education, as well as dwindling financial aid resources to support their academic pursuits.

The North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus Scholarship is awarded annually to freshman, sophmores, and juniors at Fayetteville State University.

Sangbolu "Zekee" Tamba was born in Monrovia, Liberia on December 7, 1985. He died on Wednesday, October 23, 2013.

Zekee moved to the United States residing in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota in 1997.  He graduated from Park Center High School in 2004 and decided to continue his education at Fayetteville State University in 2005.At FSU, Zekee was a very active student and leader with the Student Association Council (SAC) and Resident Assistance. In the spring of 2007, he was initiated into the Epsilon Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc. He was proud to be a part of the spring 2007 line: "The m.A. PHI. A." OrganICEd Crime, Phoreign Exchange #9. In December 2009, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Banking and Finance. Zekee relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina and was employed with Capital Bank as a Credit Analyst.  He graduated with his Master of Business Administration at the Capella University in August of 2013. Zekee loved being a role model to help young men from troubled homes and was a member of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America organization. He was active in the Phi Lambda Chapter graduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and participated in a variety of service projects including the Food Bank of North Carolina. Zekee's life was impacted tremendous by his experiences at Fayetteville State University.  This memorial scholarship is designed to have another positive impact for a male student that is matriculating at FSU.

Annette Cluff '70 and her husband Alsie have been longtime supporters of Fayetteville State University and supporting deserving students in need.  In their home city of Houston, TX they founded the Varnett School, a charter school with over 1500 students spread across 3 campuses. Over 90% qualify as economically disadvantaged. 

When introduced to then new Chancellor James A. Anderson, Mrs. Cluff said, "Right then I knew it was time for me to give a gift back to the university that had given me so much...Much of my success came from the people at FSU"The Annette and Alsie Cluff Endowed Scholarship is awarded to select students who are classified for the Chancellor's Global Scholars Community at Fayetteville State University.

The Class of 1957 established this scholarship in happy memory of their time here at FSU over 60 years ago.  They have chosen to give this scholarship to a deserving FSU student in good standing with the University.

The Class of 1961 established this scholarship in happy memory of their time here at FSU over 50 years ago.  They have chosen to honor teachers by giving this scholarship to a deserving Senior majoring in Elementary Education.

The Class of 1963 established this scholarship in happy memory of their time here at FSU over 50 years ago.  They have chosen to honor a deserving FSU student in good standing with the University.

The Class of 1977 established this scholarship in happy memory of their time here at FSU over 40 years ago.  They have chosen to give this scholarship to a deserving FSU student in meets the criteria for the University Honors Program.

Daisy Spears Stroud graduated from Fayetteville State in 1941 with a Bachelors in Primary Education. After dedicating her career to teaching, she retired after thirty years.  "I remembered that Fayetteville was to me the right size for someone to be there and especially someone who would like to have the experience of not being too big or too small. You got an opportunity to know all the students and it was more like a family to me," Stroud said.

The Daisy Spears Stroud Scholarship is awarded to Elementary Education majors.

James H. Tyson was a 1972 graduate of Fayetteville State University.  He passed away in 2002.  His wife, Elaine B. Tyson established this scholarship in his memory, continuing his legacy of devotion to education and being instrumental in encouraging and aiding many young people to get a college degree.

The James H. Tyson Scholarship is awarded to students from North Edgecombe Senior High.

The MBA Program, which is accredited by AACSB International, is designed to meet the educational and/or career goals of: 1.) business professionals 
who wish to advance in their careers, 2.) other professionals interested in changing careers by pursuing an advanced degree in business, and 3.) individuals who are considering a doctoral degree in business.

MBA program alumni established this scholarship to aid other students pursuing a Masters in Business Administration at Fayetteville State.

The Bailey-Houston Athletic Scholarship was established by Mary H. Bailey '87 and Greg Bailey '87 
in honor of their fathers George S. Bailey and Joseph M. Houston, both avid sports fans, who believed participation in sports at all levels taught some of life's most valuable lessons.

The Bailey-Houston Athletic Scholarship assists deserving students participating in competive sports 
at FSU that is in good academic standing with the University.

Cora and Joe Hall reside in Jacksonville, NC and are strong supporters of the FSU football team during and after their son, Terrance Hall, '90, played.  Even today Cora Hall can be seen at FSU football games and along the tailgaters at all FSU Homecomings.  Terrance wanted to honor his parents by starting this scholarship fund.  He currently resides in the DC area working with the Federal Government as well as an adjunct professor of Criminal Justice.

The Cora and Joe Hall Athletic Scholarship is open to any FSU athlete, particullarly a football player.

Horace T. Small was appointed the Athletic Director at Fayetteville State University in July 1996.  He also lectured with the Physical Education Department. 

The Horace T. Small Athletic Scholarship is awarded to FSU student athletes in the football and golf programs.

Jim Scurry was Dean of Students at Fayetteville State University.  The FSU Athletic Club established the Jim Scurry Scholarship in memory of him.

The Jim Scurry Scholarship is awarded to outstanding student athletes.

Dr. Willis B. McLeod, a 1964 graduate of Fayetteville State University, was appointed Chancellor on November 15, 1995 bringing over 30 years of professional experience in the field of education. He was the ninth Chief Executive Officer of the 135-year-old institution, and the first alumnus to serve as Chancellor since FSU became a constituent of The University of North Carolina.  Dr. McLeod retired as Chancellor on June 30, 2003 with emeritus status.

The Willis B. McLeod Athletic Scholarship is given to a deserving  Fayetteville State University student athlete

Fred Waddell is the founder of the Waddell Group and member of the Fayetteville State University Foundation Board.  The Waddell Group is comprised of a diverse group of African-American men and women from across the United States that support FSU's Athletic Programs.

The Waddell Group Scholarship is awarded to student athletes who show outstanding performance on a varsity team.
