Funding Opportunities Worth Billions Announced at Fayetteville State University
Developing protective, light clothing for soldiers; designing a revolutionary energy source for combat vehicles; and testing medical devices that stop bleeding until help arrives.
These are just a few of the futuristic projects in which Fayetteville State University (FSU) students or faculty may become involved following last week's Taking the Pentagon to the People sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and hosted by FSU on April 11-12.
Designed to increase participation of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in federally sponsored research and education programs, Taking the Pentagon to the People highlighted funding opportunities for universities and businesses, internships for faculty and students, and employment for graduates.
Department of Defense officials announced funding opportunities worth billions of dollars during the two-day event.
Among the presenting officials was Dr. Sammy Choi, Director of Research at the Womack Army Medical Center, who highlighted the work of the Cape Fear Research Consortium, an alliance of Fayetteville State University, Methodist University, Campbell University, Fayetteville Technical Community College, and Womack Army Medical Center.
According to Dr. Daryush Ila, FSU's Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Technology Transfer and chief planner of the event, the program attracted 240 overall participants, including representatives from 23 DoD agencies; 36 universities, and 16 businesses. "It was the first time FSU has hosted such an event," he noted, "and all the feedback we are receiving indicates the program was an enormous success."
