BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Cevdet Akbay received his B.S. Degree in Chemistry Education at İnönü University in Turkey in 1990. Afterward worked as a middle and high school teacher for 3 years. He then moved to the U.S.A to pursue his Master's and Ph.D. degrees. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees under supervision of Dr. Isiah M. Warner at Louisiana State University in 1999 and 2002, respectively. He then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to work for Georgia State University as Postdoctoral Research Associate in Dr. Shahab A. Shamsi's research laboratory from 2002 to 2004. Dr. Akbay joined Fayetteville State University in August 2004 as an Assistant Professor; tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2010, and promoted to full professor in 2013. Being a big fan of research, he established his research laboratory with the financial support from the National Institutes of Health in 2007. He has mentored Postdoctoral Research Associates, undergraduate students, and high school students in his research laboratory. His research focuses on synthesis, characterization, and utilization novel monomeric and polymeric chiral and achiral as well as cationic and anionic surfactants and their application in capillary electrophoresis as pseudostationary phases for separation of small (e.g., DNA bases, drugs such as beta blockers, benzodiazepines, explosives, isoflavones, benzene derivatives and other environmentally important molecules) and large (e.g., proteins) chiral and achiral compounds. Along with his basic research, he has been working on implementation of student-centered active learning environment with upside-down pedagogies (SCALE-UP) at Fayetteville State University. He has worked for several years as Assistant Chair before becoming the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics in 2014.
