Most degrees at FSU require 120 credit hours. There are milestones in place to help you graduate in four years or less and reduce your financial obligations. With life’s challenges, we know it can be hard to stay on track. Thanks to the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding, we are offering a Summer School Academic Progression Scholarship to help you get the hours you need to graduate on time.

What is Covered in FREE Summer School?

After Pell and other scholarships are applied, FREE Summer school covers 2 courses, up to 7 credit hours, for undergraduate students and 1 course, up to 3 credit hours, for graduate students from the College of Education. Book rental is included. Room and board (All-Access Meal Plan) will be provided for students living on campus during the summer. On-campus housing spaces are limited and based upon availability.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

If you meet any of the criteria listed below, then you are encouraged to apply:

  • All full-time, first-time undergraduate students are eligible (students who entered FSU as freshmen).
  • All full-time students who completed least 12 credit hours during Fall ’22 are eligible.
  • All full-time students attempting at least 15 credit hours in Spring ’23 are eligible.
  • All seniors who need credit hours to graduate in the summer are eligible
  • Current College of Education graduate students are also eligible.

How to apply & Important Dates?

  1. Fill out the application if you meet the eligibility criteria.
  2. Starting December 1, 2022, applications will be reviewed, and notifications will be sent via email. You must receive an approval notification in order to receive scholarship funds for 30-60-90 Free Summer School.
  3. March 31 is the deadline to submit the housing application. After March 31 housing may be available on a case-by-case basis.
  4. May 20, 2023 is the deadline to apply for 30-60-90 Free Summer School Scholarship
  5. The final 30-60-90 Free Summer School bill with be finalized on June 9

All students who meet the eligibility requirements should meet with their advisor and register for Summer School by June 1st. Students who meet the eligibility criteria will receive notification of acceptance into the FREE Summer School program through their FSU email. Once you are notified, there are no additional steps you need to take.

** We strongly encourage you to meet with your advisor to get a detailed list of your summer course needs because you will not be able to add new courses after May 20, 2023**

With a multitude of dining and housing choices, you can enjoy the convenience of being close to your classes and the array of fun student engagement activities and fitness options for no additional charge.

A variety of fun and safe activities are planned for your enjoyment and entertainment on campus this summer! The Office of Student Engagement has formed the FSU Student Summer Activities Board. They will implement an array of safe, fun, and creative social, cultural, and recreational activities during the evenings and weekends, so you are certain to find something fun to do when it is time to set aside the books and relax. Students will reside in a combination of facilities on West Campus: Harris Hall, Joyner Hall and Smith Hall. Limited spaces may be available in University Place Apartments.

What is the purpose of the 30-60-90 Free Summer School Scholarship?

This scholarship gives ungraduated students the opportunity to earn up to 7 credit hours in the summer without incurring summer school debt. The credits earned helps to shorten the time it takes to earn a degree and helps students get back on track to graduate in 4 years or less.

When should I apply for 30-60-90 Free Summer School?

Now!!! If you believe you are eligible then you can fill out the application now. The deadline to submit applications is May 20.

What is the application process and when will I be notified?

When you submit an application, it will be reviewed, and you will receive an email letting you now whether or not you will receive a scholarship to attend 30-60-90 Free Summer School. Notification will begin on December 1 and will end on May 20.

Can graduate students apply?

The scholarship is being offered to graduate students in the College of Education. Graduate students must complete the application. COE graduate students can take up to 3 credit hours in the summer

Can transfer students apply?

Yes, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria:

  • All full-time, first-time undergraduate students are eligible (students who entered FSU as freshmen).
  • All full-time students who completed least 12 credit hours during Fall ’22 are eligible.
  • All full-time students attempting at least 15 credit hours in Spring ’23 are eligible.

Can military students apply?

Yes, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria:

Do I qualify for the 30-60-90 summer program, if I am suspended or on probation?

Students who are suspended, on probation or may have an exceptionally low GPA must talk to their advisor as soon as possible.

How do I register for classes?

After discussing your lit of summer courses with your advisor, you can register for summer courses.

What is the deadline to register for courses?

What happens if I register for classes after the May 20 deadline?

You can add and drop courses before May 20. However, you will be responsible for the cost of any courses added after May 20.

What happens if I drop courses after the May 20 deadline?

You can add and drop courses before May 20. You can drop classes after May 20, but you should contact your advisor before dropping any courses.

I only have one class left. Can I still participate?

Yes.

How many classes can you take with Free Summer School?

  • Undergraduate students can register for up to 7 credit hours
  • College of Education Graduate Students can register for 3 credit hours

Can I take more class at my own expense, outside of what FREE Summer School covers?

It depends on you GPA. Contact your advisor to learn more.

FAQs: Housing Qualifications

Who Qualifies for Summer Housing?

There is limited housing space during summer. The priority for space allocation will remain with those students who are taking full-time summer credit hours (minimum of 6) and face to face classes.

Students in hybrid class formats could still reside on campus.

For example: A student taking 3 credits in person lab for Summer Term A and virtual 3 credit course for Summer Term B.

Students in all virtual classes can still apply for a housing exception as long as space is available.

Similar to current student handbook, part-time students (less than 6 credit hours) can still apply for a housing exception. However, space priority will go to full-time traditional students.

What if I am only taking course during Summer Term B?

A student not registered at all for Summer Term A (starts June 1st) but is registered for Summer Term B could not move on campus until their specific term starts in July.

FAQs: Living On Campus

What does free room and board mean?

Free room and board means that 30-60-90 Free Summer school participants who submit a housing application will have the opportunity to live in a dorm and will receive an all-access meal plan during the summer session that the student is registered for.

How do I apply for 30-60-90 Summer School Free room and board?

Fill out the summer school housing application by March 31 to make sure you receive housing. If you apply for housing after the housing application deadline of March 31 then housing decisions will be made of a cases-by-case bases depending on availability.

If we receive room and board, where will we live?

FREE Summer School recipients will live in Renaissance Hall. Hackley Honors Hall will also be available if we run out of space in Renaissance. UPA was originally reported as one of the options, but it is not.

Do you have to live on campus to participate?

You do not have to live on campus to participate.

If I receive room and board, what meal plan will I receive?

You will receive the All-Access Meal Plan.

What costs are covered by the 30-60-90 Free Summer School scholarship:

The following program costs are covered for students who apply and receive a 30-60-90 Free Summer School scholarship:

  • Undergraduate student can register for up to 7 credit hours
  • College of Education Graduate Students can register for 3 credit hours
  • Room and board (with an all-access meal plan)
  • Book rental fee
  • All other education related fees associated with summer school attendance

If applicable, Pell and other education related scholarships will be used to cover the cost of summer school first and then scholarship funds for 30-60-90 Free Summer School will be used to cover any additional costs for summer school.

Am I eligible to apply if I don’t receive Pell grants or other Scholarships?

Yes, if you don’t receive Pell grants or other educational scholarships then 30-60-90 Scholarship funds will be used to cover 100% of the following program costs:

  • Undergraduate student can register for up to 7 credit hours
  • College of Education Graduate Students can register for 3 credit hours
  • Room and board (with an all-access meal plan)
  • Book rental fee
  • All other education related fees associated with summer school attendance

When will I receive the final bill for summer school?

Final 30-60-90 Summer Bills will be distributed by June 9. Housing and course registration must be complete by May 20. After May 20 you may be responsible for any summer school related charges. 

What happens if I register for classes before receiving approval to participate in the 30-60-90 Free Summer School Program?

You must receive program approval notification to receive funding for 30-60-90 Free Summer School. If you register for courses and you were not approved for Free Summer School, then you will have to cover the cost of the courses and fees.
